I wish I could still express shock at this type of story, but it seems to be the norm in situations where anyone is given authority with a boost of unassailable (in the minds of their followers) ideology at their side.

I originally had a snarky remark about “don’t they mean a shepherd in wolf’s clothing” but this is too ugly to joke about so I deleted it.

What pisses me off are the Christians who make excuses for these kinds of bastards. In every congregation, there’s a group that will go to the alleged perpetrator’s trial and beg the judge/jury for leniency after he’s convicted. This occurred in my Middle GA city a few years ago. A congregation wanted to build a new church, but its’ members made the mistake of giving the pastor financial control over the project. The banks discovered that he’d been buying personal items like expensive cars and a Wonder Lodge with the money and went after him. Some in the congregation showed up in court everyday to support him and after he was convicted, begged the jury to be lenient on him. He has about seven years left to serve on a 10 year prison sentence. IMO, he got just what he deserved because he knew he was doing wrong when he did it. I left my church the day of my dad’s funeral in 2001 and I haven’t looked back. My former minister and some of the other prominent members of the church were attending sex parties at the pastor’s house where they were watching pornographic movies and doing who knows what else. After finding out about this, I decided that there was no way I’d sit in church and look to him for any kind of guidance. Last I heard, the membership at the church is way down. I don’t plan to ever grace the doorstep of the place again, even though the pastor and some of the remaining members have asked begged me to come back.

A Friday at the Tail End of SpringJust out and about for a bit. First a walk downtown where the two rivers meet, then a short drive just outside of town.
